Irving Murray Scott correspondence, 1871 Nov. 24-1882 Mar. 1.

Written by mechanical engineer Irving Murray Scott, from San Francisco, Calif. and Baltimore, Md., the letters (19 letters, 52 p.) and analysis (1 letter, 26 p.) are written in a "Francis' Improved Manifold Writer" bound volume that produced carbon copies of originals. In his stated capacity as a "referee" for J.H. Green and John H. Redington and buyers in London, Scott provides a detailed appraisal and economic analysis for a proposed time-limited contract sale of the Redington quicksilver mine in Napa County, Calif. Scott's analysis was derived from a personal visit to the mining site and includes summaries, a list of inventory holdings and their dollar values, a total valuation of the mine's current holdings and profits and an estimate of potential future earnings and return on investment. Detailed physical descriptions of the mining operations are also included for the equipment, ventilation, drainage, water pumping, furnaces, ore extraction, and quicksilver yield as well as suggestions for improvements and additions to improve productivity. When the contractual deadine for purchasing the mine expires Scott, puzzled and angry, writes the principals signing one letter "and mad as a March Hare." Other correspondence includes letters between Scott and friends, relatives, stockbrokers, legal firms, attorneys, various parties in the contract dipute, other brief analyses for the Homogera and Mendocino quicksilver mines, and the possibility of obtaining contract work at "the [San Francisco?] Mint." Also includes two letters written by relatives, Allie [Alice Webb Scott?] to a cousin Effie, and Laurance Irving Scott to his sister.
